Pune: Activist Demands Action Against Illegal Tree Cutting in NIBM Annexe

Kondhwa, 10th March 2025: Activist Jaymala Dhankikar has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take strict action against the illegal felling of two fully grown trees near the Axis Bank ATM at S.M. Ghule Chowk in NIBM Annexe, Mohammadwadi.
In a letter addressed to the PMC Commissioner, Dhankikar highlighted that the incident is a blatant violation of environmental laws and called for an FIR against those responsible.
“The cutting of these trees is not only an environmental offense but also a violation of multiple laws, including the Indian Forest Act, the Environment Protection Act, and the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act,” she stated.
Dhankikar has demanded that the PMC take immediate steps to:
Direct the Pune Police to register an FIR against those responsible.
Conduct a thorough investigation to identify the culprits.
Take disciplinary action against any PMC officials found negligent in preventing the act.
She further emphasized the urgent need for stricter enforcement of environmental laws to prevent such incidents in the future.
Residents of the area have also expressed concern over the loss of green cover, urging authorities to act swiftly. The PMC is yet to respond to the activist’s appeal.
