Pune, 20th October 2026: The Diveagar tragedy that claimed the lives of eight Std XI students has exposed widespread regulatory lapses in Alandi, with a municipal survey finding that all 16 private coaching centres in the temple town were operating without registration.

The Alandi Municipal Council’s inspection also flagged unauthorised structures and outstanding property tax dues. The coaching institute linked to the October 1 incident reportedly owes Rs 45,634 in property tax and faces questions over unauthorised construction.

The findings have triggered demands for a comprehensive audit of coaching centres, covering legal permissions, fire safety, structural stability, emergency exits and staff preparedness. Residents have criticised authorities for failing to enforce regulations before the fatal incident.

Activists said coaching centres operating outside the formal school system needed closer scrutiny and better coordination between civic and education authorities.

Alandi Municipal Council chief officer Madhav Khandekar said notices would be issued to coaching centres and property owners operating without the necessary permissions. Establishments have been asked to secure approvals within a stipulated period, failing which action would follow.

The eight students died during a one-day trip to Diveagar in Raigad district organised by a private coaching institute in Alandi, about 25km from Pune. The group was among 42 students taken on the outing.
