Pune, 13th July 2022: After a married woman died by suicide in Pune, Maharashtra, the family members of the woman accused the husband and his parents of demanding dowry. The police have registered a case against the man and his parents, living in the Tirth area, Alandi and arrested them. The deceased is identified as Priyanka Umargikar (21).

The deceased woman’s mother-in-law, Vaijayanti Umargikar is the former president of Alandi Municipal Corporation and won the election on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket. On the other hand, the mother of the deceased is also a councillor of the Bharatiya Janata Party of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), while her father is a businessman.

According to the police, Priyanka was married on November 16, 2021, to Abhishek Ashok Umargekar. A BMW car along with precious ornaments was given in dowry from the bride’s side to the groom.

Even after marriage, the in-laws were demanding different types of valuables and furniture in the house from Priyanka. Despite giving all valuable things in dowry, her husband, mother-in-law, and father-in-law were ignoring her, due to which she was in a lot of trouble. She had also complained to her father before her death.

On July 10, Priyanka’s body was found hanging from the fan in her room. As soon as the information was received, the Alandi police reached the spot and sent the body to the government hospital for post-mortem.

After this incident, an audio call recording of Priyanka has also surfaced in which she is telling her father how her in-laws were insisting on money to get the furniture made for the house.

Priyanka’s family members have lodged a complaint with the police for demanding dowry and forcing her to take such steps, accusing them of torturing their daughter for dowry. The deceased’s parents have demanded the strictest legal action against the culprits.
