Pune, 30th November 2025: In a surprising achievement, Pune Airport has secured the 19th spot in India for international passenger traffic, despite operating only two international routes and lacking a full-fledged international runway. The latest data released by the Bureau of Immigration features Pune among the country’s ‘Top-20’ airports handling international travelers.

According to 2024 statistics, a total of 10,663 foreign tourists arrived in Pune. Delhi Airport topped the national list with 32,24,675 international passengers, while Madurai recorded the lowest number at 10,570.

Industry watchers say the ranking highlights Pune’s strong global travel demand. Currently, only flights to Dubai and Bangkok operate from the city, largely due to runway constraints and Pune Airport’s status as an Indian Air Force base.

Infrastructure upgrades remain crucial for boosting international connectivity. The existing runway is 2,535 meters long and 45 meters wide, falling short of the length required for larger long-haul aircraft. A proposal is under review to expand the runway by 650 meters on the eastern side and 350 meters on the western side — a total extension of 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Upon completion, the runway would stretch to 9,316 feet, making it easier for wide-body international jets to land.

Aviation experts say runway expansion, upgraded terminal facilities, and more global routes could help Pune rise further in the international rankings and better serve its growing business and tourism sectors.
