Swargate, 26th February 2025: A shocking case of sexual assault has emerged from Pune, where a young woman was raped in a stationary Shivshahi bus at Swargate ST depot while on her way to her village. The incident occurred around 5:30 am on Tuesday, sending shockwaves across the city. Police have identified the accused as Dattatray Ramdas Gade, and eight special teams have been dispatched to trace and arrest him.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reacted strongly to the incident, stating that it was a deeply distressing and unfortunate event. He confirmed that the police received a complaint at 9:30 am on Tuesday and that a thorough investigation is underway. “I have spoken to the Commissioner of Police (CP). The accused is from Shirur taluka, and police teams are conducting searches there as well as in his native village. He must be found at any cost and given the strictest punishment, including the death penalty,” said Pawar.
He also emphasized the importance of security in public spaces like Swargate and Shivajinagar bus depots, which see heavy footfall daily. “Despite all our efforts, such incidents are still happening, which is extremely painful. I have directed officials to analyze all available CCTV footage and ensure the victim receives all necessary support,” he added.
The victim, who was traveling from Pune to Phaltan, was allegedly lured into a Shivshahi bus at Swargate by the accused, who then raped her after locking the vehicle. The incident came to light later in the day when the victim filed a complaint, and police launched an investigation using CCTV footage to track down the suspect.
The incident has sparked outrage across Pune, with opposition parties criticizing the law-and-order situation in the city. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Vasant More visited the crime scene and made serious allegations, claiming that such incidents are occurring frequently at Swargate depot and that the administration is failing to ensure passenger safety.
Police Intensify Search Operation
Meanwhile, the Pune Police have assured that the accused will be arrested soon, with multiple teams actively searching for him. The incident has reignited the debate on women’s safety in public transport hubs, prompting demands for stricter security measures at Pune’s bus depots.
