Pune, 8th April 2023: Sweet and juicy Alphonso mangoes in Konkan have been hit by unseasonal rains followed by increased heat this year. The production will be 30 to 40 per cent less as compared to usual. In the fruit section of the market yard, the arrival of Alphonso has decreased compared to last week. The season will end soon.

Mango trees start blooming in October. However, if there is unseasonal rain after that, the bloom falls off, and the re-blooming process stops for a while. Accordingly, this process was stopped in December and January. However, even after that, there was good growth, and farmers were expecting a good harvest.

However, the heat took its toll along with the rain, and as a result, production has declined. After recovering from unseasonal rains, due to the heat, the crops of the farmers were damaged.

At the beginning of every year, the prices of Alphonso are high. Generally, after 15th April, the production of mangoes increases, and the price falls. At that time, common citizens taste the Alphonso. However, this year, the production of Alphonso is less, and as a result, prices will continue to rise. Therefore, it is clear that the common man, who is already suffering from inflation, will not be able to afford the taste of Alphonso this year.

Hapu season was prolonged due to unseasonal rains. Then the temperature increased. Last week, too, the temperature was 38 to 39 degrees. As a result, the canes turned yellow, and yield declined. The season will end soon, and the farmers will have to face losses. – Makarand Kanhe, Ganapatipule, Dist. Ratnagiri.

One of the traders from Market Yard said, “Last week, around 4,000 boxes of mangoes were received in the fruit section of the market yard. There has been a decrease, and now 2,500-3,000 boxes have been received. However, prices are stable. Farmers say that production will decrease in the coming time due to the effect of changing climate. As a result, prices are likely to increase.”
