Pune, 31st March 2023: A 65-year-old Army veteran has filed a complaint for cybercrime after losing his entire life savings to a fraudster. The fraudsters contacted the victim in mid-February, luring him with a ‘money for likes’ opportunity. Over the course of the third and fourth week, they forced the victim to carry out 26 transactions, duping a total of Rs 1.1 crore to more than a dozen bank accounts.

The fraud began when the victim received a text message from a woman claiming to be from Thailand, offering him a part-time job paying Rs 50 for every ‘like’ on a YouTube video link she sent. After receiving initial earnings of Rs 150, the victim was added to a phone messenger group called ’employee trial group’, where the fraudster tricked him into making online payments of Rs 1.1 crore in 26 transactions to 13 different bank accounts.

The Pune police have launched an investigation into the case.
