Khadki, 14th September 2025: Over 150 students from St. Joseph Girls’ and Boys’ School, Khadki, took part in a Nature Walk at the Ganeshkhind Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) on Saturday. The event was organized under the banner of Pune Samwad, a citizen-led movement for environmental protection, with the aim of sensitizing the younger generation to the importance of conserving natural and cultural heritage.

The BHS, located behind Savitribai Phule Pune University near Aundh Road, is regarded as a rare green oasis in the city. However, it now faces a serious threat, as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed building a sewage treatment plant (STP) at the site. The project, activists fear, would require cutting down ancient trees and could reduce the invaluable habitat to a dumping ground.

The walk also included artistic and cultural performances. Several artists painted in the open green space, drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings. Musician Swapnil Thakur, known as a “one-man symphony,” performed self-composed songs with his band to highlight the urgency of environmental conservation. Environmentalists Ameet Singh and Anub George further explained the ecological and cultural significance of the site to the students.

The initiative to involve schools was spearheaded by Anne Anish and Rekha Joshi, with the goal of nurturing a sense of belonging and responsibility towards nature among children.

Reaffirming its mission, Pune Samwad stated that it will continue to raise awareness and mobilize citizens to safeguard Pune’s biodiversity for future generations.
