Pune: BJ Medical College and Sassoon Hospital To Slash Rs 1 Crore Electricity Bill With Solar Power Initiative

Pune, 20th December 2024: Facing soaring electricity costs, BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital have announced a solar power initiative to cut their monthly electricity bill of ₹1 crore by half over the next five years. The project involves the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of the college and hospital buildings.
The initiative will be implemented in phases, with the first phase targeting the roof of the college’s main building. This initial step is expected to reduce electricity expenses by ₹8 lakh to ₹10 lakh per month. The administration plans to achieve annual savings of 8-10% initially, with cumulative savings reaching 50% within five years.
Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of the college and hospital, stated, “Currently, our monthly electricity bill is around ₹1 crore. With this solar power project, we aim to bring it down to ₹50 lakh over the next five years. This will significantly reduce costs and contribute to environmental conservation.”
Remarkably, the hospital administration will not incur any expenses for the project. A private company has agreed to install the solar panels under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, covering the entire cost of installation.
“By adopting non-conventional energy sources like solar power, we can reduce electricity consumption, save costs, and also contribute to environmental protection,” Dr. Pawar added.
