Pune: PMC Cracks Down On Feeding Pigeons, Collects Rs 28,000 In Fines To Curb Health Risks

Pune, 20th December 2024: Despite repeated appeals from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to stop feeding pigeons and doves, the problem continues to escalate, prompting stricter action by the civic body. Over the past month, the PMC has collected a fine of ₹28,000 in 38 cases for breaching its order against feeding birds.
The municipal authorities have linked the increasing pigeon population to a rise in lung-related diseases caused by germs from bird droppings and feathers. Health officials report a steady increase in patients with such ailments over recent months. Despite these warnings, many residents continue to feed pigeons in public spaces, posing health risks to the community.
Taking serious note of the issue, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale directed the Solid Waste Management Department to act against those defying the ban. Teams were deployed across the city to raise awareness and fine violators under the rule prohibiting littering in public places, with penalties ranging from ₹500 to ₹5,000.
Since 1st December, the PMC has focused its efforts on areas heavily frequented by pigeons, including Kothrud, Warje Malwadi, Swargate, Sarasbaug, Riverbed, Ashtabhuja Ghat, and Nene Ghat. Awareness boards have been installed, and officials have visited these areas during peak hours to educate residents about the health hazards associated with feeding birds.
Sandeep Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of the Solid Waste Management Department, confirmed the collection of ₹28,000 in fines so far and warned of increased penalties for repeat offenders. Additionally, the PMC has launched a citywide campaign to identify and clean areas where pigeons roost in large numbers.
