Pimpri Chinchwad, 2nd March 2023: Ashwini Jagtap of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the Chinchwad assembly seat in the by-elections held after the untimely death of her husband, late MLA Laxman Jagtap.
She emerged victorious with a massive margin of 36,770 votes, defeating Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Nana Kate of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) comprising NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray group). Jagtap got 1,35,434 votes, Kate got 99,343 and Kalate got 44,082 votes.
Her victory was fueled by the sympathy votes she received due to the tragic loss of her husband. In addition, she also benefited from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray group) rebel candidate Rahul Kalate, who garnered a considerable amount of votes.
She had been active in politics since 1997 with her husband. She is the founder of Pratibha Women Foundation and has been organising health camps and job fairs.
The campaigning for the by-elections was fierce, with senior leaders from both the BJP-led NDA and the MVA taking part in the election rallies to support their respective candidates. However, Jagtap’s overwhelming victory has cemented the BJP’s hold over the Chinchwad assembly seat.
In a statement after her win, Jagtap thanked the voters for their support and promised to work for the betterment of the constituency. She said, “I am grateful to the voters of Chinchwad for their overwhelming support. I will work tirelessly to bring development to the region like my late husband.”
Jagtap’s victory has sent a strong message to the opposition parties, especially the NCP, which was hoping to win the seat.
