Hadapsar, 13th May 2026: A major security scare was averted in Pune after authorities recovered a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Ushakiran Hospital in Kamdhenu Estate, Hadapsar. The device, described by officials as a low-grade explosive, was swiftly and safely neutralized by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS).

Confirming the incident to the media, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar stated, “In the preliminary investigation, it prima facie appears to be a bomb-like, low-grade explosive IED. Upon receiving the information, our BDDS and police teams immediately relocated the device to an open area at the Gliding Centre and safely defused it.”

He commended the prompt and expert handling of the situation by the BDDS team, which prevented any potential untoward incident.

A high-level probe has been launched into the discovery of the explosive. Authorities confirmed that the investigation is being conducted on a “war footing.” Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Pune City Local Police, the Crime Branch, and the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), have formed joint teams to investigate the matter.

When questioned about potential suspects or CCTV footage related to the incident, the police maintained that the probe is still in its initial stages. “The investigation is currently at a very preliminary stage. A detailed disclosure will be made as soon as we have more information,” the official added.

Dr Vilas Gaikwad, Director of Ushakiran Hospital, said, “The incident took place around 7 pm. A staff member informed me. The bomb-like object was found in the corner of a bathroom on the first floor. I took away the box and kept it in an open area and informed the police. Soon, the BDDS team took away the object.”

When asked why he lifted the bomb-like object, Gaikwadi said, “I removed it so that there is minimal damage.”
