Pune, 17th November 2022: When he was involved in a tragic accident while out on a hike in Lonavala earlier this year, a teenage boy from Pune is attributing part of his survival to his Apple Watch.

The incident happened in July when Smit Mehta, studying in Pune for the NEET exam, scheduled a trip to Lonavala with his pals to go hiking. Mehta tumbled down a valley on the way back while he was in the rain and lost his footing.

Mehta remembered leaving his phone in his friend’s luggage that day, leaving him without anyone around to call for assistance. The Apple Watch Series 7 was the only gadget he had with him at the time. Mehta used the Apple Watch to phone his parents and request assistance, thanks to the integrated cellular connectivity. The rescue squad was then summoned, and with a few hikers’ assistance, Mehta was successfully dragged out of the water and transported to safety.

Mehta later underwent surgery after being checked into a Lonavala hospital. He was later hospitalized at a hospital in Mumbai and eventually released in August. He claims he is now “recovering” successfully.

Mehta reported his experience in an email to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Cook surprised the boy by responding and wishing him a quick recovery. Cook wrote, “I am delighted you are on the road to recovery.”
