Pune: Businessman Arrested For Running SUV Over Man Sleeping On Road

Market Yard, 27th April 2022: A 38-year-old businessman has been arrested by Pune city police for running his vehicle over a man sleeping on the road.

The arrested accused has been identified as Anup Mehta (38). Based on a complaint from Police Constable Prashant Musle, an FIR has been registered against him at Market Yard police station.

According to police, an unidentified homeless man (aged about 70 years) was sleeping on the road when both the wheels of the SUV driven by Mehta ran over him. The incident took place on April 20 near Salisbury Park. The man was rushed to Sassoon Hospital where died during treatment.

The incident was captured on the CCTV camera of a shop. Based on the footage from various spots, police have arrested Mehta for offences under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304a (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Mehta told police that he wasn’t aware that the man was sleeping on the road.
