Pune, 24th February 2023: The Industries Department has issued a circular directing all corporations, companies, institutions, and industrial establishments under the Department of Industry, Energy, and Labor to provide workers, officers, and employees with a paid vacation on Sunday, February 26, for the by-elections of two assembly constituencies Kasba Peth and Chinchwad.

The circular was issued because, in previous elections, establishments failed to provide paid leave or exemptions to voters, resulting in many individuals being unable to vote. This is a significant threat to democracy, which is why the circular was issued to ensure that all eligible voters are able to cast their vote, the department officials said.

According to the Representation of People Act, voters are entitled to a paid vacation or proper discounts on work hours during elections. Even workers, officers, and employees working outside the polling sector should be given a paid vacation on the day of the election if they are eligible to vote in the polling sector.

In rare situations where workers in the polling sector are unable to take the whole day off, they should be given a minimum of two hours of exemption from work instead of a paid vacation. However, prior permission must be obtained from the concerned District Election Officer (Collector). It is also essential to ensure that voters receive at least two hours of free time to cast their votes.

As per the circular, all corporations, industries, companies, and institutions under the Department of Industry, Energy, and Labor must adhere strictly to these instructions. Failure to comply will result in appropriate action being taken against the establishments. If there are complaints regarding individuals who were unable to vote due to work, proper action will also be taken.
