Pune: Citizens and Congress Workers Clash Amidst #ChaloPMC Civic Protest

Shivajinagar, 9th August 2023: Tensions heightened in Pune on Wednesday as citizens’ frustration over unresolved civic issues escalated into violence, exacerbated by the intrusion of some Congress party members attempting to politicize the situation.
The peaceful protest, organized to draw attention to a spectrum of concerns plaguing the city, took a disconcerting turn as confrontations between protestors and activists reportedly escalated into physical altercations.
The citizens of Pune find themselves perpetually grappling with a litany of challenges, prompting them to declare their intent to protest outside the Municipal Corporation building on August Kranti Din. The grievances encompassed issues ranging from chronic traffic congestion and haphazard emergency parking arrangements to the release of untreated sewage into the river and the need for an effective waste management plan. In response to this call for action, hundreds of people gathered outside the PMC building in Shivajinagar.
As the protest unfolded, a notable development emerged with the presence of certain Congress party workers at the scene. The citizenry, asserting the apolitical nature of their movement, voiced concerns over attempts to co-opt their cause for partisan purposes. Rupesh Kesekar, a vocal participant in the demonstration, reported incidents of physical altercations, suggesting that clashes had erupted between protestors and Congress workers.
As the city’s residents strive to attain resolutions to their pressing concerns, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for constructive dialogue and genuine collaboration between civic authorities and the citizenry they serve.
