Pune: Citizens and Shop Owners Demand Stricter Measures to Address Illegal Hawkers Issue on M G Road

Camp, 1st June 2023: The recent crackdown on illegal vendors on M G Road in Pune Camp has drawn criticism from shop owners and citizens who believe it is insufficient and long overdue. The bustling area, frequented by shoppers, is being overrun by hawkers, negatively impacting legitimate businesses. The need for M G Road to be designated as a no-hawking zone has become increasingly evident.

Following persistent complaints from shop owners, some action was finally taken last Saturday against several illegal hawkers. Senior police inspector Rajesh Tatkare of the Lashkar police station confirmed that 15 individuals were targeted during the operation. Tatkare explained that the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) officials are leading the action, as they possess the necessary authority to address encroachments. The police are cooperating with the PCB in an effort to alleviate commuter concerns.

When questioned about the nature of the action taken, Tatkare disclosed that unauthorized vendors and hawkers occupying the road and footpaths were driven away. To prevent their return, 10-12 police personnel have been deployed to patrol the area.

However, traders argue that the hawkers have already been provided designated spaces on Fashion Street and should be prohibited from operating on M G Road. They emphasize that these encroachments limit the space available for vehicles, leading to traffic congestion during peak hours.
