Pune: CM Devendra Fadnavis Announces Major Conservation Efforts for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Forts

Junnar, 19th February 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced significant conservation efforts for the forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, emphasizing their historical and cultural importance. Speaking at the Shiv Jayanti celebration at Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of Maharaj, Fadnavis outlined several key initiatives.
A special task force has been created by the state government to remove all encroachments from Shivaji’s forts. This move aims to preserve the historical integrity of these sites and ensure their proper maintenance.
Conservation work is currently underway at several key locations, including Shivneri Fort, Raigad Fort (the capital of Swarajya), and other significant fortresses.
Fadnavis highlighted that 12 forts associated with Shivaji Maharaj have been selected for nomination as United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites. A presentation on these forts, noted for their architectural, water conservation, and environmental significance, will be made at an upcoming assembly in Paris.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that these forts would gain global recognition, attracting visitors from around the world to witness Maharashtra’s rich historical heritage.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the Maharashtra Government’s commitment to creating an inclusive administration and welfare state, in line with Shivaji Maharaj’s vision. He mentioned plans to develop a tourist circuit to improve facilities for visitors to these forts.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured that funding would not be a constraint for the conservation of these forts. He highlighted ongoing development works at various forts including Shivneri, Raigad, Pratapgad, Sinhagad, and Purandar.
The event at Shivneri Fort saw the participation of various dignitaries and included cultural performances celebrating Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy. The Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers paid homage to statues of young Shivaji and Jijabai and participated in a traditional palki procession.
