Pune, 16th December 2025: Cold weather conditions persisted in Pune as the city recorded single-digit minimum temperatures for the eighth consecutive day, driven by the sustained influence of cold northerly winds, officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to IMD data, Pune recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday (December 16), while Pashan emerged as the coldest location in the city at 9 degrees Celsius. Over the past eight days, minimum temperatures have consistently hovered between 8 and 9 degrees Celsius.

The mercury dipped to 7.9 degrees Celsius on December 11, marking the lowest minimum temperature recorded in Pune so far this winter season.

Meteorological records indicate that this is the longest continuous spell of single-digit minimum temperatures in Pune since 2015. While the city also recorded eight days of single-digit minimums in 2016 and 2018, those occurrences were spread across the winter season and did not happen consecutively.

Experts have attributed the prolonged cold spell to favourable winter conditions this year. Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the Weather and Forecasting Division at IMD Pune, said the number of western disturbances this season has remained within normal limits, allowing cold northerly winds to firmly establish over Maharashtra.

“The combined effect of strong northerly winds and active La Niña conditions is resulting in a higher number of cold days in Pune and across the state,” Kashyapi said.
