Pune: Confusion Over PMC’s Property Tax Rebate – Activist Group Slams Civic Body for Ignoring Citizens’ Concerns

Pune, 6th May 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing criticism from the civic group Sajag Nagrik Manch for failing to clearly indicate the 40% property tax rebate on bills issued to residents. Group president Vivek Velankar has alleged that despite repeated appeals, the PMC has not addressed the issue, leaving citizens confused about whether their rebate has been granted.

Starting May 1, the PMC began distributing over 12.5 lakh property tax bills through mail and hand delivery. While the civic body had previously asked property owners to submit PT-3 forms to claim the rebate, many of the new bills reportedly do not specify whether the discount has been applied — leading to widespread uncertainty among taxpayers.

The PMC’s tax department maintains that rebates have been applied where applicable. However, several bills lack any clear mention of the discount, causing confusion not just for citizens but also among PMC officials, who are reportedly unable to verify rebate status from the printed bills.

Velankar further criticised the civic body for delaying the bill distribution by a month and still failing to ensure transparency and clarity in communication.

Responding to the concerns, PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P clarified that only bills explicitly showing the rebate have been approved for the discount. He added that citizens whose bills do not reflect the rebate likely failed to submit complete documentation and are required to reapply.
