Pune: Congress Celebrates as Suresh Kalmadi Cleared in Commonwealth Games Case After 15 Years

Pune, 29th April 2025: Former Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi has been cleared of all charges in the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) corruption case, bringing a 15-year-long legal battle to an end. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a closure report, stating there is no evidence to proceed against him.
Following the announcement, Congress workers and supporters gathered outside Kalmadi’s residence in Pune to celebrate the development with slogans, sweets, and garlands.
Kalmadi, who had headed the organizing committee for the Delhi CWG, was once at the center of high-profile allegations of corruption and financial irregularities. Investigations by both the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had implicated multiple individuals, including Kalmadi. However, after prolonged legal scrutiny, authorities have concluded that the evidence against him is insufficient.
Speaking on the occasion, Congress worker Sachin Aadeakar said, “Truth may take time, but it always prevails,” taking a swipe at BJP, Anna Hazare, and Arvind Kejriwal, who had been vocal critics during the anti-corruption movement. He added that the accusations now appear baseless and welcomed the legal relief granted to Kalmadi.
The closure of the case is being seen by Congress as a moral and political vindication, marking the end of one of the most high-profile corruption cases in Indian sports history.
