Hinjawadi, 28th August 2025: A tragic lift accident in Hinjawadi has claimed the life of a construction worker, raising serious questions about building safety. The incident occurred on April 4, 2025, at a building near Laxmi Chowk owned by Mistrilal Pemaji Dewasi.

The victim, Mushtaq Ali, reportedly fell from the fifth floor while using a lift that was not only malfunctioning but also lacked essential safety measures. Police sources said the lift’s sensor was broken, there was no proper lighting, and safety nets were not installed. Despite knowing these risks, Ali was allegedly instructed to ride the lift. He fell onto the lift stalled on the first floor, sustaining critical injuries, and died during treatment on April 14.

On August 26, Ali’s wife, Rehana Begum (45), filed a formal complaint with Hinjawadi Police Station. The accused in the case include builder Somnath Jijaba Shitole (36) and property owner Mistrilal Dewasi (47), both booked for criminal negligence.

According to investigators, Shitole directed Ali and others to use the defective lift, fully aware of its condition. Dewasi failed to provide adequate lighting and neglected to install safety nets near the lift shaft. “Their combined negligence directly led to Mushtaq Ali’s death,” said a police official.

Pimpri Chinchwad police have launched a detailed investigation and are questioning both the builder and the owner. Officials added that additional charges could be filed if further lapses in building safety are discovered.
