Pune: Decide On School Hours At Local Level, Education Commissioner Directs Authorities As Temperatures Rise
Pune, 9th April 2022: Due to the heat wave in some districts of Maharashtra, the education commissioner Suraj Mandhare has instructed the education officials to take a decision at the local level after discussing with the district collector and chief executive officer of Zilla Parishad regarding school hours.
Due to the outbreak of Corona, schools were delayed in some places this year. Therefore, the school education department has decided to continue the school till the end of April to complete the syllabus and take the exams to compensate for the educational loss of the students.
However, in the last few days, some parts of the state have been suffering from severe heat wave. Against this background, it has been suggested to take a decision at the local level regarding school time.
Some districts are facing heat wave. Therefore, following the warning given by the Indian Meteorological Department, the concerned education officer should take a decision at the district level in consultation with the district collector and chief executive officer, said state education commissioner Suraj Mandhare.
Teachers and parents are outraged after the school education department decided to keep the school open till the end of April. As the summer heat intensified in April, it was suggested that it would be difficult to continue full-time schooling.
A parent told PunekarNews.in, “The kids are being made to attend schools from 10 am to 2 pm which is hazardous to health considering the 40 degree temperatures in daytime. The government must intervene and allow only a few hours of school time in the morning.”
Pune Zilla Parishad CEO Ayush Prasad said, “We had a discussion with senior authorities at the state government and the Education Commissioner. We await their directions in this regard. In case there is a heat wave warning, during those limited days, District Disaster Management Authority, chaired by Collector can take a decision. Since there is no warning from IMD, we have not initiated any such proposal. We have ensured schools shut by noon by starting schools early. We cannot further prepone the time as we have to start school one hour after sunrise. Also reducing class timings would mean fewer hours of class.”
