Pune, 3rd April 2023: The Maharashtra state government has taken a step towards splitting Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to form a new civic body. A letter has been sent to PMC seeking its opinion on creating a new Municipal Corporation for Hadapsar and Wagholi areas. Local political leaders, including the guardian minister of Pune, Chandrakant Patil, and the MLA from Hadapsar, Chetan Tupe Patil, had previously demanded the formation of a new Municipal Corporation for Hadapsar area.

The government had merged 23 new villages into PMC’s jurisdiction in 2020, making it geographically the largest municipal corporation in the country. However, Patil believes that a new civic body is necessary for the proper development of the area. Last year, during a political rally in Hadapsar, he emphasized the need for a new municipal corporation.

The state government has also decided to demerge Fursungi and Uruli Devachi villages from the jurisdiction of PMC and make them a separate municipal council. The decision to form new civic bodies is an attempt to streamline the administration of rapidly growing regions and facilitate better governance. However, the process of creating a new civic body involves several legal and administrative steps, including an official resolution, approval by the state government, and the delimitation of electoral wards.

If the new municipal corporation for Hadapsar and Wagholi areas is formed, it will likely bring about significant changes in the administration of the region and better cater to the needs of its residents.
