Pune, 24th March 2023: The district administration of Pune has taken steps to reduce the number of road accidents by introducing a new scheme called District Road Safety Measures. A separate fund has been allocated for the plan.

Under the scheme, all the roads in the district will be surveyed, and necessary steps such as installation of notice boards, traffic signs, and safety measures will be taken at accident-prone locations. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the plan.

Road Safety Committees exist in every district, with the Collector as the chairman of the committee. While measures are suggested, they have not been as effective due to the lack of a provision of separate funds. With the new scheme, the government aims to reduce the number of road accidents that have been increasing for the past few years.

Last year saw over 1,300 fatal accidents in the district, with the highest number of accidents involving two-wheelers and pedestrians in urban areas. Accidents are more frequent during the night and early morning. The RTO will determine accident-prone and congested areas in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad cities, as well as rural areas, and propose safety measures to be implemented at these locations.

By implementing the District Road Safety Measures, the government hopes to reduce the number of accidents in the district and make roads safer for everyone.
