Pune District Administration Begins Land Acquisition for PMRDA Ring Road

Pune, 15th March 2025: The Pune district administration has officially initiated the land acquisition process for the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) ring road project, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
As an incentive for landowners, District Collector Jitendra Dudy has announced a 25% bonus for those who voluntarily surrender their land, in accordance with the Land Acquisition Act.
Landowners to Get Higher Compensation for Voluntary Surrender
Speaking at a recent meeting, Dudy emphasized the benefits for cooperative landowners. “If land is willingly given, the owners will receive 2.5 times the total compensation as per the law. This will not only ensure a smoother acquisition process but also guarantee fair compensation,” he said.
A joint land survey is scheduled for March-April to assess the total number of beneficiaries, according to district officials. The first and second phases of land acquisition are expected to be completed by May.
Breakdown of Land Requirements
The 77.4-km-long and 65-metre-wide ring road project will require approximately 743.41 hectares of land, including:
- 23.28 hectares of government-owned land
- 45.84 hectares of forest land
- 6.25 hectares belonging to the defence department
- 54.12 hectares of land transferred to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)
- 324.43 hectares of private land
Forced Acquisition If Necessary
While the administration hopes for voluntary participation, compulsory acquisition will be enforced if necessary, warned Land Acquisition Coordinator Kalyan Pandhare. “We prefer to work with landowners and secure cooperation, but if there is resistance, we are prepared to proceed with forced acquisition as per legal provisions,” he stated.
Officials noted that much of the required land is already designated as non-agricultural (NA) land, which should simplify the process. A dedicated land acquisition officer has been appointed to oversee the entire operation.
Collaborative Effort for Infrastructure Development
The ring road project is a joint initiative between PMRDA and the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), designed to accommodate Pune’s rapidly increasing transportation demands.
The recent meeting, chaired by Collector Jitendra Dudy, was attended by land acquisition officer Kalyan Pandhare, district land records superintendent S. More, PMRDA joint commissioner Himmat Kharade, and PMRDA superintendent engineer Ashok Bhalkar.
As Pune’s urban expansion continues, the administration is prioritizing the timely completion of this critical infrastructure project, ensuring minimal delays in land acquisition.
