Wagholi, 28th June 2022: Manali Khedkar lives in Micasa society on Kesnand Road in Wagholi, on Friday (June 24) at around 6.30 pm heard some frightening noises. Distracted by the constant whining that sounded like a dog crying, she decided to examine. She rushed upstairs and saw a security guard was allegedly monstrously beating a three- to a five-month-old pup with a wooden stick. Reportedly, his reason for this barbaric and inhuman act was that the pup had entered the building and allegedly bit him.

Over the last six months, the number of cases of crime against animals has risen in the city with over 150 animal brutality cases being reported.

Meanwhile, Khedkar shouted at the guard warning him to stop the brutal act. However, he continued to beat the dog. In a hopeless attempt, she snatched the stick from the guard and yelled at him for beating a dog. By justifying his actions, guards told him that the stray had entered the society and bitten him.

“The guard showed no signs of guilt for his actions. Instead told me that I was overreacting and creating a scene. He said the dog was just fine and only needed some water. After briefly arguing with him, I took the dog to the vet with the help of my father. The puppy died late at night, having suffered excessive bleeding and a broken shoulder and teeth,” Khedkar added further.

Dr Bijoy Mahapatra said “The puppy was bleeding profusely and was in trauma. His teeth and shoulders were fractured. We provided him with the necessary treatment and suggested keeping him in an ICU under observation. However, Khedkar decided to shift the dog to another hospital, but he died of his injuries.”

Khedkar decided to file a complaint with the Lonikand police station in this regard. When she reached the police station, she was informed to come up with the postmortem report. Khedkar due to all the shocks, had forgotten to get the animal’s postmortem done.

Gajanan Pawar, senior police inspector, at Lonikand police station, informed that they have received a complaint regarding the matter and an investigation is already underway. “A case would be registered for perpetrating cruelty against animals if the security guard is found guilty,” he added further.
