Pune: Driver Remanded in Police Custody in Hinjawadi Bus Fire Case

Pimpri-Chinchwad, 28th March 2025: A local court on Thursday remanded driver Janardhan Hambardikar to three days of police custody in connection with the Hinjewadi arson case, in which four people lost their lives, and six others were critically injured.
The incident occurred on March 19 around 8 a.m. when a major fire broke out in a Tempo Traveller in Hinjawadi phase one. Initially suspected to be an accident, a police investigation later revealed it was a planned act of arson.
According to the police, Hambardikar was disgruntled over not receiving a Diwali bonus and allegedly orchestrated the fire as an act of revenge. He reportedly stole one liter of benzene chemical from his company and, while transporting workers in the Tempo Traveller, purchased a matchbox in the same area. As the vehicle neared the company premises, Hambardikar allegedly poured the benzene-soaked rag near the steering wheel and set it ablaze.
Within moments, the fire engulfed the vehicle. Some workers managed to jump out, but four people died on the spot. Hambardikar also sustained serious injuries and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Initially, the case was considered an accident, but within hours, police uncovered evidence pointing to a deliberate conspiracy.
The injured accused was presented before the court on Friday, where he was remanded to police custody for three days. Investigators are now looking into the source of the benzene chemical and other evidence related to the crime, an official said.
The six injured victims remain in intensive care as the investigation continues.
