Purandar, 23rd November 2024: Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena’s former minister Vijay Shivtare won against Indian National Congress MLA Sanjay Jagtap and Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Sambhaji Zende by 24,188 votes.

It was expected to be a tough contest for Shivtare, as Zende, from his own alliance, was likely to split the votes. However, Zende could not manage to take more than 50,000 votes. Political experts had predicted Sanjay Jagtap would win due to the anticipated vote split between Shivtare and Zende, but Shivtare led from the first round and emerged victorious comfortably.

Jagtap, the incumbent MLA, faced significant anti-incumbency, particularly due to the delay in the approval of the new international airport in Purandar, a project advanced by Mahayuti leader Murlidhar Mohol instead of Jagtap.

With a total of 4.51 lakh voters and a turnout of 60.02%, the constituency’s average voter turnout favoured Shivtare, who was chosen as their leader for the next five years.
