Pune, 27th November 2024: The long-awaited construction of a ropeway to the Ekvira Devi temple in Karla, spearheaded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), is set to begin soon. The tender process, previously delayed due to the model code of conduct for the assembly elections, is now expected to be finalized within a week, paving the way for the project’s commencement.

The state government had approved a comprehensive development plan for the Ekvira Devi temple area, allocating Rs 21 crore for temple development and an additional Rs 45 crore for the construction of the ropeway and a flyover at Karla junction. With the election-related restrictions now lifted, MSRDC’s special committee has expedited the tender process, and work is anticipated to start shortly thereafter.

Located atop a mountain in Karla, on the Sahyadri slopes, the Ekvira Devi temple is a revered pilgrimage site that attracts a steady influx of devotees and tourists. The temple, though small, requires visitors to climb a steep set of stairs to reach it, posing a challenge for many.

The surrounding region, enriched with historical landmarks such as the Bhaje Caves and forts like Lohgad from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s era, along with its proximity to popular hill stations Lonavala and Khandala, makes it a tourism hotspot. The proposed ropeway aims to make the temple more accessible while also bolstering the area’s appeal as a tourist destination.

The Rs 45-crore ropeway project, approved in principle by the MSRDC, had been delayed due to the election code. However, MSRDC Superintending Engineer Rahul Vasaikar confirmed that with the code of conduct now lifted, the tender process will be completed within a week. “The ropeway will make it easier for devotees to access the temple and also boost tourism in the region,” Vasaikar added.

An estimated 7-8 lakh devotees and tourists visit the Ekvira Devi temple and nearby attractions annually. The completion of the ropeway is expected to significantly enhance convenience for pilgrims and further develop Karla as a major tourism hub.
