Pune, 11th March 2023: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has reported that the arrears of electricity consumers in the non-agricultural category in the Pune regional division have reached a staggering Rs 1,950 crore. This amount is owed by 16 lakh domestic, commercial, industrial, public water supply, street lights, and other consumers.

The largest figure of arrears is from the public street lighting scheme, with an outstanding balance of Rs 1,188 crore for 21,604 schemes. Meanwhile, 10,747 consumers of the public water supply scheme have an outstanding balance of Rs 420 crore. A total of 13,62,329 household customers owe Rs 170 crore, 1,40,688 commercial customers owe Rs 54 crore, and 39,310 industrial customers owe Rs 82 crore.

The MSEDCL is forced to take out high-interest loans to pay the power generating companies daily due to the arrears, which results in increased electricity rates. Ankush Nale, Regional Director of MSEDCL, has urged customers to cooperate by paying their bills on time. He stressed that the arrears must be recovered to provide quality service to the customers.
To achieve this, the MSEDCL has launched a campaign to disconnect the electricity supply to those with outstanding balances. Nale emphasized that customers who are in arrears should pay their dues immediately to avoid disconnection.

The situation with electricity arrears in Pune is concerning and threatens the electricity supply in the region. Therefore, the cooperation of customers is crucial to ensure uninterrupted electricity service.
