Purandar, 6th March 2025: Farmers in Purandar taluka are experiencing a profitable season as onion prices remain high. According to a report by the Purandar Agriculture Department, for the Rabi season of 2024-25, onion cultivation exceeded expectations, with 7,018.2 hectares planted—107.41% of the average 6,534.1 hectares. While early-harvested onions have already been sold, farmers are now busy harvesting the main crop, known as “Garva” onions.

Onions are fetching an average market price of ₹10 to ₹30 per kg, which is significantly better compared to previous years. This price surge has brought relief and satisfaction to farmers, who are hopeful for substantial profits this season.

Major onion-producing villages in Purandar, including Veer, Parinche, Mahur, Pisurve, Naygaon, Rajuri, Malshiras, Kumbharvalan, Belsar, Valhe, Waghapur, Garade, Dive, and Dhalewadi, have reported robust yields. However, the past two days of cloudy weather had farmers rushing to secure their crops before any potential damage.

To meet high demand, onions from Purandar are being packed in red mesh bags and jute sacks and transported not only to markets in Pune, Mumbai, and Kolhapur but also to cities in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, such as Madurai, Mysore, and Tiruchirapalli. Farmers note that Bengaluru, Kolhapur, and Madurai are offering better prices than Pune and Mumbai.
