Pune: Fire Prevention Surveys in Commercial Buildings to Enhance Safety in Pimpri-Chinchwad
Pimpri, 17th October 2023: The expanding number of commercial buildings in Pimpri-Chinchwad has led to increased concerns about fire safety. To address these issues, the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Protection Measures Act, 2006, which is applicable statewide, imposes specific requirements on building owners and occupants.
According to Section 3(1) of this Act, it is mandatory to implement fire prevention measures in buildings and submit a prescribed certificate from licensed institutions to the Municipal Fire Office, as stipulated in Section 3(3).
It is crucial to adopt these preventive measures in commercial buildings to mitigate the risk of fire incidents and potential loss of life and property. However, compliance with these regulations is often overlooked by contractors or occupants until after a fire incident occurs. Given the impracticality of the fire brigade constantly monitoring the fire safety systems in commercial buildings, a unique solution has been devised, involving women from local self-help groups.
Considering the magnitude of commercial income generated in Pimpri-Chinchwad, the Municipal Fire Department aims to conduct fire prevention surveys of commercial buildings in the area. These surveys will be carried out by women from authorized self-help groups affiliated with the Women’s Development Corporation, Pune.
Building owners and occupants will be required to submit photographs showcasing the condition of their fire-fighting systems, issued licenses, fire safety certificates, and relevant documentation to the fire department.
The Municipal Corporation has requested all commercial building owners and occupants in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region to collaborate with the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Advancement Department and the authorized women’s self-help groups.
