Pune: Five Former Corporators Set To Join BJP Amid Rising Political Tensions

Pune, 1st January 2024: The new year in Pune has begun with signs of political realignments as five former corporators from a major political party are reportedly set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). These corporators recently traveled to Mumbai alongside a prominent political leader from Pune and held discussions with senior BJP leaders in the state. Their formal induction into the BJP is expected to take place in Mumbai or Pune in the coming days.
With the Lok Sabha and Assembly Elections concluded, the state is preparing for the local body elections, which are anticipated to be held in the next few months after a prolonged delay. In Pune, the BJP, which achieved a clean sweep in the recent Assembly elections, is poised to strengthen its position further in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections.
The BJP, which held a dominant majority in the 2017 PMC elections, is expected to retain its control in the upcoming polls. Sensing this political tide, the five former corporators have decided to align themselves with the BJP, indicating their willingness to contest under the party’s banner in the municipal elections.
Sources revealed that during their recent visit to Mumbai, these corporators received assurances of prominent roles within the BJP and tickets to contest in the PMC elections. Among those planning to join are two former female corporators and three male counterparts, some of whom are believed to have aspirations for Assembly seats.
This strategic move by the corporators reflects their intent to avoid contesting against the BJP in the municipal elections and instead leverage the party’s rising influence in Pune. Their official entry into the BJP is expected to be announced within the next few days, marking a significant shift in Pune’s political landscape.
