Hinjawadi, 6th July 2025: In a major step towards addressing flooding and drainage issues in the Hinjawadi area, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have appointed a dedicated agency to carry out a comprehensive flood mitigation study. The agency is set to begin work from Monday.

The move comes after recent directives from the Chief Minister’s Office urging authorities to proactively manage urban flooding and civic challenges in the fast-developing IT hub of Pune.

“The selected agency will conduct a detailed assessment of vulnerable flood zones, watershed patterns, and the existing drainage infrastructure,” said PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase. “Based on the findings, they will suggest both immediate and long-term measures to minimize flood risks.”

Mhase also clarified that going forward, construction permissions in the region will be closely tied to the outcomes of this study. “No new development proposal will be approved without clearance from the irrigation department, as per the study’s recommendations,” he added.

The first phase of the study will focus entirely on Hinjawadi, with the agency expected to submit its initial report within a month. A broader assessment covering other areas under PMRDA jurisdiction will follow, and that report is anticipated to be ready in four to five months.

The study aims to guide future urban planning, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainable development in one of Pune’s most rapidly urbanising corridors.
