Pune University Faces Student Backlash for Celebratory Event with No Student Entry
Pune, 6th July 2025: Several student organizations staged protests on Saturday against Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), accusing the administration of excluding students from a celebratory event held to mark the university’s inclusion in the QS World University Rankings, where it secured the 566th global rank.
While university officials, senate members, and management council representatives were invited to the event, students claimed they were barred from attending despite being integral to the university’s growth and success.
“The university owes its reputation to its students, yet we were not even allowed to witness the celebration,” said Rahul Sasane, president of the University Student Struggle Action Committee. “This was not just an oversight—it was a deliberate dismissal of student contributions. We strongly oppose this decision.”
The event, attended by Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, was organized on campus but was reportedly restricted to select invitees only.
Criticism also poured in over the alleged expenditure on the program. Kuldeep Ambekar, who heads the student welfare initiative Students Helping Hands, questioned the university’s spending priorities. “The administration claims it lacks funds for essential student services like affordable meals and housing. Yet it seems to have no hesitation in spending lakhs on a function that didn’t even welcome students,” he said.
Echoing similar concerns, Abhishek Shinde, secretary of the city unit of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and an SPPU student, added, “This event serves no academic or developmental purpose for students or faculty. The university must justify how this gathering benefits the actual stakeholders of education.”
Some students also saw the exclusion as symbolic of deeper disconnects between the administration and the student community.
“The rise in rankings is a collective achievement involving students, faculty, and staff,” said student Atharv Ingle. “Denying students access to the celebration exposes the administration’s narrow mindset and misplaced priorities.”
Despite the university’s pride in achieving international recognition, student bodies have demanded greater transparency, inclusivity, and a redirection of funds toward genuine academic and welfare needs.
