Pune Floods : 300 people rescued by Army Near Bhairoba Nala

Pune, September 26, 2019 : Pune has been witnessing incessant and heavy spells of rain over the last few days. On 26 September 2019, at around 1220 AM in the night, Army representatives at Pune received an SOS call for requirement of relief and rescue operations in area  of Chimta Basti on Pune-Solapur Road, near St Patrick’s School.

 

Bhairoba Nala had overflowed and a large number of residents were stranded in the locality due to inundation.

 

People were also stranded on two bridges connecting Empress  Garden to BT Kawade Road that  were under water. The local district administration were notified, however, no formal requisition was received. On humanitarian grounds four Relief Teams from local units and one Engineer Task Force from Bombay Engineering Group and Centre comprising of 157 Army personnel were mustered and sprung into rescue and relief operations immediately. Timely and swift action by the Indian Army averted a possible mishap and prevented loss of lives.

A total of around 300 stranded civilians were rescued from houses under water, stranded on either side of the bridges, and stuck on roof tops and trees. Two ambulances were also employed for medical emergency during the operations. Hot tea and biscuits were served to the evacuated people. The operations were called off at 4 AM in the morning on 26 September 2019.
