Pune, 26th February 2023: The ongoing by-election in the Kasba Peth constituency witnessed a unique initiative taken by a forum to encourage voters to come out and cast their votes. The forum offered free tea and books to voters who showed their voting ink. Additionally, a ‘Vote and get mehendi on hand’ concept was implemented for women voters. However, despite these efforts, the voter turnout has been slow.

Reports suggest that only 20.68% polling was recorded in Chinchwad and 18.5% in Kasba till 1 pm. There have also been complaints of voter apathy, with many voters expressing their displeasure at not being given the right to vote. Some voters could not cast their vote as their names were missing from the voter list, while others found the names of dead people on the list, raising concerns about bogus voting.

Despite claims of updating the voter lists, many names have disappeared, causing inconvenience to thousands of voters. Many citizens had to go home without voting, after visiting two-three centers in search of their names. The exclusion of names from the electoral roll has caused a lot of agony to voters who had to search for their names in the scorching sun.
