Pune, January 11, 2021: Puneites are most likely to get start their metro journey by the end of the year. Four metro trains ‘Made in India’ for the Pune metro project are likely to be on track by December 2021 in the city. The train sets for the Pune Metro project will begin manufacturing from the month of April at the Kolkata-based Titagarh factory. The first train will arrive directly from Italy in May, while the first in-house train from Kolkata will run in August in Pune.

Maharashtra Metro Railway Corporation’s (Mahametro) Pune Metro project will require 34 train sets of three coaches each. The work has been handed over to Titagarh-Firema by Mahometro, which has already started the process of manufacturing Metro coaches at its factory in Italy. The replica of the coach was unveiled by Durga Shankar Mishra, President of Mahametro and Secretary, Union Ministry of Housing and Civil Affairs.

Mahametro’s Managing Director Brijesh Dixit, Director Sunil Mathur and Titagarh’s Chief Executive Officer Umesh Chaudhary were present at the occasion. The production of Metro coaches at the Kolkata factory in Titagarh will start in April. All the preparations have been completed for this and the first train set constructed here will start serving the people of Pune in August as scheduled, informed Mishra. “Pune Metro will have the most attractive and international standard coaches. The process of manufacturing these metro coaches will soon be underway and at least four trains will be started to serve the people of Pune in the coming year,” said Dixit.

Last week, the Pune Metro was successfully tested on the priority route between Pimpri and Phugewadi. However, the train was brought from Nagpur by Mahametro. The construction of the first train for Pune is currently in progress in Italy and will be launched in May after completing various tests. As the next train will be manufactured in Kolkata, the first train is likely to be added to the Mahometro fleet in August and by the end of the year.
