Pune: Ganeshkhind Declared Biodiversity Heritage Site, Maharashtra Government Creates 23 New Conservation Reserves And 5 Sanctuaries

Mumbai, 15th June 2022: In the last two and a half years, 23 new conservation reserves of 1750.63 sq km, 5 new sanctuaries of 647.1294 sq km and the creation of four biodiversity heritage sites of 85.89 hectares have been constructed.

The new conservation reserves declared in the last two and a half years in the state include Tilari (29.53), Jor Jambhali (65.11), Amboli Dodamarg (56.92), Vishalgad (92.96), Panhalgad (72.90) in Kolhapur district, Mayani Bird Conservation (8.67), Chandgad (225.24), Gaganbawda (104.39), Ajra Bhudargad (238.33), Masai Plateau (5.34), Munia (96.01) in Nagpur district, Mograksa (103.92), Mahendri in Amravati district (67.82), Chivatibari in Dhule district (66.04), Alaldari (100.56), Kalvan in Nashik district (84.12), Muragad (42.87), Trimbakeshwar (96.97), Igatpuri (88.50), Raigad District Raigad (47.62), Roha (27.30), Pune District Bhor (28.44), Satara District Dare Khurd (Mahadare) (1.07).

Of these, Tilari, Jor Jambhli, Amboli Dodamarg, Vishalgad, Panhalgad, Mayani, Chandgad, Munia and Mahendra are the nine conservation reserve areas notified.

Kanhargaon in Chandrapur district (269.40), expanded Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary (78.40), Muktai Bhavani in Jalgaon district (122.740), Kolamarka in Gadchiroli district (175.72), Lonar Wildlife Sanctuary in Buldana district (4).

Ganeshkhind (33.01) in Pune district, Landorkhori (48.08) in Jalgaon district, Bambarde Myristica (2.59) in Kolhapur district and Shustura Hiranyakeshi have been declared as four biodiversity heritage sites in the last one and half years.

Lonar has got Ramsar site status and a proposal for the Ramsar status of Thane Bay Flamingo Sanctuary has been sent to the central government.
