Pune, 7th March 2021: A day after he was caught by a joint team of Pune rural police and Satara police in Jaoli taluka of Satara district, notorious goon Gajanan Pandharinath Marne was today sent to Yerwada Central Jail for one year.

Based on a proposal from  Pune rural police, District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh has issued an order to keep Marne under preventive detention for one year under the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act (MPDA), 1981.

According to police reports, due to industrialization in Pune city and adjoining areas and two Municipal Corporations namely Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, the influx of people from other districts and states to Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad city is increasing. Taking advantage of unemployed youths there is a growing tendency to become ‘Bhai, Dada, Bhau’ by criminals and extort money from people, businessmen and companies.

In order to reign in organized crime in Pune district, Special Inspector General of Police (Kolhapur range) Manoj Lohia has instructed the police to take action against gangs under stringent laws like MPDA and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). Accordingly, under the supervision of Pune rural SP Dr Abhinav Deshmukh, a team led by Police Inspector Padmakar Ghanwat of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) has externed (Tadipar) 74 criminals from 17 gangs since October 2020. Also, 65 criminals from 12 gangs have signed good behaviour bond.

To curb the organized criminal activities of Bala alias Jagdish Popat Darade, Appa Dnyandev Mane, Rahul Arpan Bhosale and Nilesh alias Nanu alias Nana Chandrakant Kurlap gangs under jurisdictions of Bhigwan, Rajgad, Alephata and Shirur police stations, a total of 31 gang members have been charged under MCOCA. On March 3, Nilesh Bansilal Ghaiwal, the leader of Ghaiwal gang, was detained for one year under the MPDA.

According to police records, Gaja alias Gajanan Pandharinath Marne and Nilesh Ghaiwal have been committing offences since 2000. They have also been charged together for crimes in 2001 and 2003. Later due to differences they parted ways and formed independent gangs. The rivalry became bitter since 2009 when Marne gang tried to kill Ghaiwal. Both gangs have attacked each other to establish their hegemony.

There are 22 cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion, robbery and assault against Marne. However, he has been acquitted in many cases due to ‘lack of evidence’. After his release from Taloja jail on January 15 this year, he reached Pune in a procession with his supporters via the Expressway. There were over 200 people and vehicles in the convoy. They had not paid the toll as well as looted food items on the way. There have been six cases registered in this regard.

Stating that Marne is a dangerous person, Police Inspector Ashok Dhumal of Paud police station submitted a proposal to the Pune District Collector to detain him for one year under the MPDA. The Collector, after finding strong reasons / evidence against him, ordered to take Marne in preventive detention for one year on March 2.

However, Marne was hiding in different places. Acting on a specific input, a team led by Assistant Police Inspector Amol Mane, Head Constable Jitendra Kamble, Police Naik Imran Matekari, Constable Amol Pawar nabbed Marne and his three accomplices who were travelling in a car under the jurisdiction of Medha police station in Satara district on March 6.

Pune rural SP Dr Abhinav Deshmukh said that strict legal action will be taken by Pune Rural Police against criminals and gangsters who are considered dangerous to the society in future also. The Pune Rural Police is appealing to the general public to report to the police station if they are bothered by criminal gangs.
