Pune, 13th March 2023: The State GST department’s Pune unit has made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing crackdown on tax evasion and fraud, with the recent arrest of a businessman from Uttar Pradesh. The accused has allegedly committed fraud by claiming input tax credit worth over Rs 2.39 crore without any supply of goods or services.
The businessman, who reportedly traded in iron and steel products in Uttar Pradesh, was found to have created a network of fictitious firms to claim input tax credit. Moreover, he failed to pay the tax liability of over Rs 30 lakh, which was due to the department.
The GST department officials conducted an investigation into the businessman’s activities, leading to his arrest. After being produced before the court, he was remanded in judicial custody. The department has also initiated further investigation into the matter and is likely to take action against other persons involved in the fraud.
This arrest comes as part of the GST department’s nationwide campaign to detect fake GST invoices and catch tax evaders. The department has also introduced several measures to simplify the GST filing process and make it easier for businesses to comply with the tax laws. With more such initiatives in the pipeline, the GST department aims to further strengthen tax compliance and reduce fraudulent activities.
