Pune: Gym Trainer Arrested For Extortion After Threatening To Release Private Video

Pimpri Chinchwad, 23rd October 2023: A gym trainer was arrested by the anti-extortion cell of Pimpri Chinchwad Police crime branch for allegedly demanding extortion of five lakh rupees from a young man after claiming to possess a private video of him.

The accused has been identified as Mithun Sopan Mungse, a 36-year-old resident of Medankarwadi, Chakan, who worked as a gym trainer. The victim, a 21-year-old resident of Medankarwadi, filed a complaint at Chakan Police Station.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Swapna Gore, the accused, Mithun, was employed as a trainer at the gym where the complainant regularly exercised. While engaging in conversation with friends at the gym, Mithun became aware that Darshan had lost his pen drive, which contained his photos and videos.

Subsequently, Mithun sent a threatening message, claiming to possess private videos of him. He threatened to release these videos publicly unless five lakh rupees was paid. When he refused to comply, Mithun escalated his threats, about tarnishing his reputation. Under duress, the victim was coerced into transferring 14,000 rupees to two different UPI IDs to prevent the release of the compromising video.

Fearful for his safety and seeking justice, he approached the crime branch and filed a formal complaint. Acting swiftly on this complaint, the police collected information and traced the accused through the QR code linked to the extortion money. During interrogation, Mithun confessed to his crimes.

Mithun has since been arrested and handed over to Chakan police for further legal proceedings.

The investigation team included ACP Satish Mane, Police Inspector Arvind Pawar, Assistant Police Inspector Uddhav Khade, and police personnel Kiran Katkar, Pradeep Godambe, Dnyaneshwar Kurhade, Sudhir Dolas, and Nagesh Mali of the Technical Analysis Department.
