Pune: Health Concerns Mount in Kondhwa as Residents Battle Khadi Machine Pollution
Kondhwa, 28th March 2024: Residents residing in Lane No. 12 along the Katraj-Kondhwa road are facing severe health repercussions due to the operation of a Khadi (gravel) machine within their residential vicinity. The continuous operation of the machine has resulted in widespread respiratory and lung ailments among the populace.
Despite persistent efforts by local citizens to address the issue with the Kondhwa-Yewalewadi Ward Office under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), assurances of action have yielded no tangible results. Hemant Kirulkar, Assistant Commissioner of the Kondhwa-Yewalewadi Ward Office, has stated that a Health Inspector will investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
The gravel machine, located on the Katraj-Kondhwa road, is situated amidst densely populated areas. While the project predates the settlement, its recent operation has led to significant air and noise pollution, prompting residents to demand its relocation. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the living conditions of workers at the site and the lack of adequate health measures.
Furthermore, the operation of the gravel machine violates Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) norms. Mandatory measures such as the use of sprinklers to mitigate dust dispersion have been neglected, exacerbating air pollution. Moreover, the absence of paved roads leading to the project has resulted in constant traffic congestion, compounding residents’ woes.
Residents lamented the adverse effects of the project on their daily lives, with dust pollution disrupting their sleep patterns, particularly among the elderly. They urge swift action from the Pune Municipal Corporation and the MPCB to address the issue effectively, including the relocation of the project to alleviate residents’ suffering. MPCB Pune sub-regional officer Karthik Langote has assured that investigations will be conducted promptly upon receipt of written complaints, with necessary action to follow thereafter.
