Pune, 2nd December 2025: Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) has become one of the most serious public health challenges in India and globally. Raising concern over the rising threat, the Health Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has urged citizens to strictly follow medical guidelines and avoid misuse of antibiotics to prevent the spread of drug-resistant infections.

AMR develops when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites stop responding to medicines due to excessive or improper use of antibiotics. This makes common infections difficult to treat, increases healthcare costs, prolongs illness and poses greater risk of death.

As part of the ongoing awareness campaign, officials highlighted the theme of World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2025 — “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The focus is on promoting responsible use of medicines to safeguard future generations.

Health experts have advised people not to purchase or consume antibiotics without a doctor’s prescription. They also cautioned that antibiotics are ineffective against viral illnesses such as cold, cough and fever, and should only be used for confirmed bacterial infections.

The department emphasised completing the full course of prescribed treatment and avoiding the sharing of leftover medicines with others.
Authorities also stressed preventive measures including regular handwashing, personal hygiene, drinking clean water and completing vaccinations to reduce the risk of infections.

Hospitals and healthcare centres have been directed to follow strict infection-control protocols and ensure responsible prescription practices.
“Public participation and awareness are key in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Responsible use of antibiotics today will prevent bigger health crises tomorrow,” a senior health official said.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with the Health Department by adhering to guidelines and spreading awareness about the dangers of antibiotic misuse.
