Pune Heat Alert: Day Temperatures to Stay Above 40°C Till April 27

Pune, 22nd April 2025: Maharashtra is reeling under a severe heatwave, with Chandrapur in Vidarbha topping the national temperature charts on Monday at a scorching 45.6°C — just shy of its all-time April high of 46.4°C, recorded nearly three decades ago in 1996.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that several parts of the state, including Pune, continued to witness temperatures significantly above seasonal norms. In Pune city, Lohgaon recorded a daytime high of 42°C, while Shivajinagar registered 39.9°C — 1.7 degrees above the normal average for this time of year.
“The region is currently experiencing hot and dry winds blowing from northwestern India. This advection of warm air is common in the pre-monsoon period but is particularly intense this year,” an IMD official said.
The rising mercury isn’t limited to Pune and Chandrapur. Vidarbha remains one of the country’s hottest regions. On Monday, Brahmapuri registered 45°C, followed closely by Amravati at 44.6°C, Akola at 44.1°C, and Nagpur at 43.6°C.
An anticyclonic circulation over the lower and mid-levels of the atmosphere is being cited as the primary driver behind the prolonged heat spell in Vidarbha. “This system leads to clear skies and increased solar radiation, which in turn results in higher temperatures,” the IMD official added.
In western Maharashtra, Solapur hit 43°C, while Mumbai saw a relatively moderate 33.4°C — still uncomfortable by coastal standards. According to the regional forecast, temperatures in Pune are expected to remain between 40°C and 42°C until at least April 27.
The IMD has also warned of continuing heatwave conditions across parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh till April 25.
Citizens are advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
