Kedgaon, 19th May 2025: Kedgaon Railway Station, a historic stop on the Pune-Daund railway line with origins dating back to the late 19th century, has undergone a significant transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station, which was initially established as part of the Southern Maratha Railway Company’s initiative to connect Pune with southern Maharashtra, now features a range of modern amenities aimed at improving passenger experience and accessibility.

As part of the redevelopment project costing ₹12.54 crore, Kedgaon Station now includes a Cover over Platform (COP), ramps for Divyangjan and senior citizens, new entry and exit gates, and enhanced circulating and parking areas. The station façade has been upgraded with sandstone cladding, traditional motifs, and LED lighting. Additional upgrades include a modernised booking office, new waiting halls, and toilet blocks catering to all passengers.

Platform infrastructure has also seen improvements, with tactile paving, bright LED lighting, new shelters, and coach guidance systems. Real-time information is provided via multiline digital display boards and GPS-synced clocks.

The Pune-Daund line, on which Kedgaon is situated, likely became operational in the 1880s, aligning with the development of the adjacent Pune-Miraj line around 1887. Originally a minor stop facilitating transport of sugarcane, grains, and vegetables, the station’s importance grew with electrification and increased passenger traffic.

Kedgaon is now a key transit point for more than 2,600 daily commuters, according to Divisional Commercial Manager Hemant Kumar Behera. He noted that proposals for additional train halts are under consideration by the Railway Board, in response to frequent requests from local residents.

Prominent trains currently halting at Kedgaon include the Maharashtra Express, Hyderabad Mumbai Express, Pune Amravati Express, Satara Dadar Express, and Shirdi Dadar Express.

Kedgaon is one of 20 stations in Pune Division selected for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Alongside Lonand, it is scheduled to be inaugurated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 22, 2025.

Local commuters have welcomed the station’s transformation, citing improved access to employment, education, and healthcare in Pune. Surrounding villages such as Yevat, Patas, Khopodi and Khutbav continue to benefit from the station’s connectivity, facilitating efficient agricultural transport and economic activity.
