Loni Kalbhor, 6th June 2021: A woman has been arrested by Pune city police for allegedly killing her husband in his sleep with the help of her boyfriend. Police said that the woman conspired to murder her husband as he was becoming an obstruction in her extramarital relationship. She earlier had told police that her husband died of Coronavirus disease (COVID19).

Police have arrested Ashwini Manohar Hande (19) and Gaurav Mangesh Sutar (20) of Uttamnagar in Mantarwadi (Haveli taluka). The deceased has been identified as Manohar Hande (27), a resident of Hindavinagar in Uruli Kanchan. Hande was an engineer, Sutar was a worker at a private company. Ashwini is a housewife.

According to the police, accused Gaurav and Manohar’s wife Ashwini have been dating for the past two years. Manohar knew about their affair. Meanwhile, on May 8, Manohar was detected COVID positive. He was undergoing treatment at home. Taking the opportunity, Ashwini and Gaurav plotted to kill Manohar.

Senior Police Inspector Rajendra Mokashi, the in-charge of Loni Kalbhor police station, said, “On the night of May 23, Gaurav handed over sleeping pills to Ashwini who mixed them in milk and gave them to her husband Manohar. After making sure that he was asleep, she called  Gaurav home. The duo strangled Manohar to death and Gaurav then left from there around 2 am on May 24.”

On the morning of the 24th May, Ashwini told her mother who lived upstairs that Manohar was not waking up. He was pronounced dead and the last rites of Manohar were completed. Ashwini told police that he died due to COVID-19. A case of accidental death (AD) was registered at Loni Kalbhor police station in this case.

While investigating the case, police came to know that Ashwini was having an extramarital affair. After which the police kept a watch on Ashwini and Gaurav respectively and detained him.

“During the interrogation, Gaurav confessed the crime. After Manohar tested positive for COVID19, they plotted his murder believing nobody will suspect them. We have also arrested Ashwini”, said Inspector Mokashi.

Based on complaint from PSI Niketan Nimbalkar, an FIR has been registered against Ashwini and Gaurav for offences under sections 302 (murder), 201 (destruction of evidence), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
