Pune: In a Moment of Panic, Shirur Doctor Bravely Performs Roadside Delivery to Save Two Lives
Shirur, 25th April 2026: In a rare and deeply emotional incident blending humanity with medical duty, a woman doctor in Shirur in Pune performed a roadside delivery to save the lives of a mother and her newborn after the expectant woman was unable to reach a hospital in time due to intense labour pain.
The incident took place in Joshiwadi area of Shirur when a pregnant woman was on her way to the Shirur Rural Hospital early in the morning after experiencing labour contractions. However, as she reached close to the hospital, her condition suddenly worsened. The pain became unbearable, and she was forced to sit down on the roadside, unable to move further.
Passers-by soon noticed her distress and gathered at the spot. Realising the seriousness of the situation, locals immediately contacted nearby doctor Dr Sunita Pote and requested her urgent assistance.
Dr Pote rushed to the location without delay. After assessing the patient’s condition, she determined that shifting her to the hospital at that stage could endanger both the mother and the baby. With no time to spare, she took the bold decision to conduct the delivery on the roadside itself.
As anxious bystanders watched in concern, the doctor carried out the procedure with precision and calm under highly challenging circumstances. Within minutes, the tense atmosphere turned into relief when the cry of a newborn broke the silence, confirming a successful delivery.
Dr Pote was seen holding the newborn moments later, bringing immense relief to the mother and those gathered at the scene. The incident quickly drew praise from locals, who lauded her presence of mind, courage, and commitment to duty in a critical emergency situation.
The woman and her newborn were later shifted to a nearby hospital immediately after the delivery for treatment.
Her swift action is now being widely appreciated across Shirur, with residents calling her response an inspiring example of medical dedication and humanity.
