Pune, 3rd October 2023: In a shocking incident during the Ganesh Visarjan procession in Pune, a 23-year-old man named Aniket from Janata Vasahat area has suffered serious retinal damage, leading to partial blindness. The unfortunate event occurred when a green laser light from a DJ setup hit one of his eyes.

The news was confirmed by Dr. Anil Dudhbhate during a press conference today at the Patrakar Bhavan in Navi Peth.

Aniket participated in the Ganesha Visarjan procession at Parvati Paytha. While he was dancing, the laser light hit his eye, causing immediate blurring of vision but no immediate pain. Aniket reported that his vision in the affected eye has decreased by almost 30 percent. He sought treatment at Dudhbhate Eye Clinic on Sinhgad Road, where Dr. Dudhbhate confirmed that the retina had been burned due to the laser light exposure.

Dr Dudhbhate explained that the frequency of the green laser light is extremely high, posing a risk to anyone who comes within its ‘focal length.’ He likened the laser’s effect to burning paper with a magnifying glass in the heat. Aniket is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be recovering.

The use of DJs and laser lights has become a trend in Ganeshotsav processions. While the festivities are filled with joy and dancing, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers involved. Dr. Dudhbhate emphasized the need for an immediate ban on the use of laser lights in public events to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Dr. Dudhbhate warned that if there are more patients like Aniket, they should seek immediate medical attention. “The consequences on their education and career could be devastating,” he said. “This laser light should be avoided. There is a need to ban this laser use. Otherwise, the results will be terrible, and many innocent people will suffer.”
